Glens Host Bay Area Rivals in Two College Series Cup Matches

The San Francisco Glens hosted the inaugural College Series Cup on Treasure Island this spring, where USF women blanked Saint Mary's 4-0 and Cal and Stanford men battled to a spirited 1-1 ACC draw.

The first-annual College Series Cup concluded last Saturday, April 18, with a 1-1 draw in an ACC matchup between Cal and Stanford men’s soccer in the second Cup match hosted at San Francisco Glens Stadium on Treasure Island. 

In a spring playing of the Big Clasico, the match took on midseason intensity in front of vocal supporters for both sides. The longtime foes last played on Oct. 31, 2025, when the Golden Bears bested the then-No. 1 Cardinal by a score of 1-0 to wrap up their regular season. 

Cal forward Malcolm Zalayet opened the scoring early, putting the Golden Bears ahead in the 6th minute off of an assist from forward Cesar Cordova. A key part of the attack for the 2025 Glens’ USL League Two team, Zalayet’s goal was the lone score in a competitive first half of the match. 

In the second half, Stanford forward Eric Frintu leveled the match at 1-1 from just beyond midfield, lofting the ball into the back of the net from nearly 50 yards out in the 73rd minute for the game’s final goal. 

A week before the Golden Bears and Cardinal renewed their rivalry on the pitch, USF and Saint Mary’s braved the wind and rain in a preseason showdown, with the Gaels prevailing 4-0. 

St. Mary’s scored twice in each half, striking twice on unassisted goals from midfielder Zoe Maikai and forward Ashlyn Vaughn in the 15th and 25th minutes, respectively.

Maikai then assisted forward Brittany Holden’s goal in the 73rd minute before Vaughn collected a brace in the 88th minute off of a pass from forward Brooklyn Smith. 

Both matches highlighted the prominent Division 1 college soccer programs in the Bay Area – USF is the only Division 1 soccer team in San Francisco – with playing for these teams an attainable goal for players in the Glens Academy as part of the club’s established developmental pathway.Additionally, multiple sides featured alums of Glens’ senior teams, including Cal midfielder Florentino Junior and goalkeeper Thomas Grimes and USF defender Alyssa Jurado. Five Golden Bears will suit up for San Francisco’s 2026 USL2 side: Grimes, Junior, midfielder Nik Laredo, midfielder Junhwan Park and defender Alex Hauschild.

With free youth player admission bringing families out to Treasure Island, fans were treated to Guinness on draft and other beverages at the Guinness Bar, food from the Street Meat Taco Truck, Glens merchandise was available for purchase, and community partners like One Treasure Island engaged with fans pitchside. 

Youth players also had the opportunity for a post-match meet-and-greet with Cal and Stanford student athletes, engaging with the players and getting autographs signed. 

On Saturday, the Glens honored coach Marcus Ziemer, who passed away in March, with a moment of silence and the playing of Amazing Grace on the bagpipes by the SF Pipers at halftime.

Ziemer won the NCAA DII National Championship in his time as the head soccer coach at Sonoma State university from 1991 until 2025, and was instrumental in his leadership of NorCal Premier and in the Northern California soccer community. 

His impact and legacy will endure and the Glens extend their sympathies to all those touched by his generosity.
